Happy New Year! Are you working on your resolution for this year? One of my resolutions is to be more mindful of purchases for our home. I'm pretty budget conscious, but I want to challenge myself to think more outside of the box and reduce waste by doing more upcycle projects. And, I guess you could say I spent a bit more than I should have on craft projects in 2017. Lol.
Anyway, today I'm sharing a mini gallery wall my daughters' and I made over the school break.
The girls had been begging me to address the bare walls in their bedroom. It wasn't high on my list of to do projects, but I promised them we would get it done over school vacation week. No pressure! 😏
I picked up these canvases from Dollar Tree not knowing how I was going to change them. I just knew I wasn't going to use them as is.
Then, it hit me. I could make a silhouette image!
Here's what we did:
Step 1: Paint canvas to cover the existing artwork. Be sure to cover all edges of the canvas. It will take about 3 coats of acrylic paint for an opaque finish.
- The girls did this step. We did a white base coat for the one that would be painted pink.
Step 2: Print desired image onto cardstock paper and cut out center of image to create a stencil.
Save the image and open in Word to enlarge it.
- I found this silhouette image on weclipart.com . This was easier than trying to create the girls actual silhouettes.
Step 3: When painted canvas is completely dry, use the stencil to paint image onto the canvas.
- Important tip: when stenciling, load paint onto brush/foam/pouncer and dab onto a paper towel/newspaper until almost dry to avoid bleeding under the stencil.
Step 4: Carefully remove the stencil and allow to dry.
To complete the gallery I added this adorable wall decal, which is also from Dollar Tree.
The girls were soo excited when the gallery wall was complete! #checkedoffmylist
Pin for later!
