This past weekend, with hubby's help, I installed vinyl plank flooring in our kitchen and living room. We completed the two rooms over 3 1/2 days, and I learned a few things that may help if you decide to take on a project like this. So, if you're thinking of installing diy flooring, here are my tips!
Use knee pads!
This may be the most important tip of all. If you take nothing else from this post, please do not forget this tip! You'll thank me later.
You will be on the floor for the foreseeable length of time the install takes, and oddly enough I didn't think of this until halfway through the second day. Even though I had watched some video tutorials beforehand, this was not a detail that was stressed.
Invest in a wood flooring installation kit
I purchased
from amazon for less than $20. This kit included spacers, a tapping block, pull bar and mallet. All of these things together make for a smooth installation while creating practically invisible seams.
Use an electric saw for cutting
I had done a search beforehand and found a few options for vinyl tile cutters. I ordered one from amazon, but I would not recommend it because it seems to only be suited for thin vinyl tiles. When we tried cutting the plank, the cutter actually crushed the vinyl and damaged the interlocking mechanism. Needless to say, I will be returning the cutter.
Throughout the process, I used a utility knife to make any necessary cuts. By the end of it all my hands were sore from applying pressure to the knife.
If I were to do this again, I would invest in renting a miter saw from the hardware store!
Allow for extra time
However long you think the project will take, plan for double the time. We planned to have the two rooms done in 2 days, but what we didn't anticipate was the length of time it would take to remove the carpet in the living room. We also had our kids home (it was school vacation week) and we couldn't let them go hungry.
Be meticulous when laying the first few rows
The first few rows of flooring will be the basis for the entire room. This is where the spacers come in. The placement and alignment of these rows is critical in ensuring a smooth installation.
Of course make sure you have help! This is definitely a two person project. And watch some tutorials on YouTube for help with understanding the basics.
I hope these tips help with your project!
