Lately I've been getting some inspiration from my daughters, who also have a love of crafting. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! But, really these girls are watching videos on YouTube (age appropriate of course) and making the crafts they see in tutorials. And I'm not going out and buying them any supplies, they are using things from the recycle bin!
So, here is my upcycled Valentine's day décor made using recycled materials.

I have two easy crafts to share. The first one is a quick diy, but the second takes a little more patience.
Here are the supplies for the first craft:
- picture frame (I reused one I had)
- image from an old card (I know I'm not the only one who keeps birthday cards!)
- lace ribbon
- solid color paper (for behind the lace)
- paint and brush *optional
This upcycled card art really only takes 2 steps (if you don't paint the frame):
- cut out the image you want to use from the card, and cut the ribbon to size
- layer the frame backing with the solid paper, ribbon (creating a border), and the card image
Reassemble the frame (after paint has dried, if painted), and you are done!
For the second craft you'll need:
- cardboard
- ribbon
- embroidery hoop
- washi tape
- printed word
- pencil
- scissors and/or craft knife
- To start this mini word wreath print out a word of your choice
- On the back side of the printed word, shade over the letters with a pencil
- Flip the paper back over , place it on the cardboard, and trace the outline of the letters (this "transfers" the word
- Cut the word out
- Cover with washi tape
- *optional - add twine along the edge of the word (this adds a nice rustic touch)
- I added lace ribbon to the embroidery hoop (I only had the outer hoop, which was left from my Christmas mini wreath )
- Attach the word to the frame using hot glue, and add a twine bow for a cute added detail
This is the extent of my home décor for Valentine's day, other than a vase with flowers on my kitchen table. I didn't want to do too much because it comes and goes soo quickly.
I hope this inspires you to look through your recycling bin and get crafting! I know I'll have some more upcycled projects coming!
